What is TIFF and why can’t I see it in my browser?

The Tagged Image File Format (TIFF), is older than GIF or JPEG.
TIFF was developed in 1986 for desktop publishing, and supported bitonal imaging techniques developed in the 1970s for fax machines and scanners.

The specification has since grown, adding grayscale and color. TIFF has a wide variety of uses, especially document imaging and electronic storage.

However despite its significance, TIFF is not supported by web browsers. This talk will look at why that’s the case. We’ll look at the TIFF structure, and at tools for reading TIFF in C, Java, and JavaScript.
