Developing Augmented Reality-Enhanced Walking Tours

AR is poised to provide a huge advantage for future travelers and tourists, but it has many development challenges to overcome before it is truly street ready.

These challenges include outdoor marker recognition–especially in weather and changing conditions, matching assets to variable lighting, highly accurate geolocation, a wide variety of smart devices in use, rapid advances in end-user technology (e.g., embedded depth-sensing cameras), and more.

The pipeline for developing any but the most basic AR apps is time consuming and multi-faceted, particularly when high-grade or even photorealistic assets are required for historical accuracy and veracity. New functions are always in demand, such as multimodal interfaces, AI-assisted navigation, interactive AI characters, and engaging gameplay / narrative. In addition, the app requires a reliable and intuitive user interface to maintain a high quality experience.

This talk will cover these issues, and what developers hoping to break into the AR-enhanced tourism market should know to be successful.
